iPod Classic

I'm going shopping. Or more correctly, have gone shopping. If you weren't aware Apple today revealed their new lineup of iPods. Their first major release for 2 years. The nano and shuffle models have had some changes, including new colours. But there are two models I was most interested in. The most exciting is the release of the iPod Touch. Basically it is the iPhone (maybe we can expect them in Australia in 2008?) without the phone. It has Multi-Touch interface, wide screen display and Wi-fi web browsing. It looks great. However it only comes in 8GB and 16GB models. Which for me is not enough storage. My iPod is an old model 40GB and not only has it run out of room, but it recently decided to pack it in. So I have bought, online, the new iPod Classic. Not only does it come in 80GB models but also a huge 160GB model. Plenty of room, either way, to store my growing music collection. The models look slightly slimmer and are also cheaper (80GB is $349) which helps the wallet. The new Classic also has the new interface found on the nano, which includes the Cover Flow feature. I guess in the future the iPod Touch will have have increased capacity, but for now I am more then happy to see the Classic come through the mail.

Do you own an iPod? Do these new models interest or excite you? Do you prefer other brands of MP3 players? Do you buy music using iTunes? Personally I rarely use iTunes. I prefer to buy CDs and download them to iTunes. One thing I know. I love my iPod.

Wayne, your story is very similar to mine!
Earlier this week I put my 30GB 5th gen iPod on eBay hen I heard rumblings of a big new Apple press event that would be concerning music. This suited me fine because I was running very low on space and didn't want to have to begin to juggle music on my Mac and iPod - I wanted them both synced up nicely.

So today I wake to see the amazing touch, and the classic. Instantly, I wanted the touch (who wouldn't?) But then I saw the 16GB capacity, and the classic started looking a hell of a lot nicer.

No doubt the next 12 months will see the flash memory in the touch increased, maybe even doubled (that's when I'll start thinking about getting one). But for now the classic is a far more sensible option for my music library. I'm just trying to pick what colour!

    Bottom line:

touch = currently great for people who LOVE gadgets.
classic = currently great for people who LOVE music.

    Rant. over.

(P.S. Yes, I occasionally buy stuff from the iTunes store. B-sides, exclusive/rare EPs etc. But more often, I import my own albums into the library from CD.)

Boo for hard drive based iPod's that don't last. Wish the iPod touch was at least 64Gb.

I was also disappointed with the size of the Touch. Just not big enough. My 60gb is more or less full and even though it's over 2 years old it still works great.

But the 160gb is just way too tempting. I'll probably pick one up in the next couple months.

I've been fairly happy with my 8gb Nano for a good 12 months. I use a convoluted way of updating the music on the nano so that the music that gets played is always fresh, and keeps me going (especially in the office). So I think I'll be going for the Touch, and perhaps wait for the 2nd gen iPhone..

Never had an iPod though my current MP3 player is dying a slow death so I'll want to replace it soon. I'm mainly considering an iPod just because of the 160GB hard drive. That and I will be able to scrobble what I listen to on an iPod onto Last.fm

i'm amongst the few who don't dig the iPod. one, because i generally don't dig mp3 players (cd is physical!) and two, because others (like the good ol' iRiver) have record capacities and the ability to play any kind of digital file...

I had a little play around with the Classic today. Very nice...the new casing was different than I thought it would be (in a good way). Moving between menus did seem to be a BIT sluggish though.

I'd be lost without my 60GB ipod. It literally goes everywhere with me. The classic sounds very cool, I may just have to upgrade.

Thanks for all the comments. I was playing around with the classic in a store today, mine should be arrived in the mail monday. I can't wait to use it and put my music on it. I just hope some time in the future the touch will have bigger memory.

    Wayne,

Funny, my old 40GB iPod just died too. I hadn't even heard of the touch version, but I'll definately be picking up a 160GB classic, just gotta love that much space!

    CDs FTW.

I would die without my iPod and the new announcement caught me by surprise last week. I spent most of my morning on-line checking out the news and features and almost went to the Apple Store at lunch but then I got bogged down with other things and have been too busy to buy one. But I plan to very soon.

My 30GB 5th Gen is still working perfectly fine, but the battery life is kind of low(<8 hours)and I'm definitely out of room. Hence, new iPod. Since the Touch doesn't have nearly enough capacity, I'm going Classic. Haven't decided on the 80GB or 160... which did you buy, Wayne? Better - why? And did you go black or silver? I like the looks of the silver but I don't think I could change from black.

    Bill,
I went with the 80GB. I just didn't think I would need all that space on a 160, although I was certainly impressed by the capacity. I went Black, just prefer that colour. And the Cover Flow has me very excited as well.
